Elders had a great day today. We had fun dressing up for world book day and completing lots of different activities. Firs from year one visited us this afternoon to share their reading books with us.
Year 5 have had a great couple of days with visits from the Astrodome and Mr. Huxter who brought his virtual reality equipment into school.
On the 3rd February we were very lucky to have the Astrodome come into the school to complement our topic of out of this world. We found out about our universe and how it works. Some of the comments from the children were – “Wow,” “that was fantastic,” “I have never seen anything like that before” and “I have found out lots about our universe.”
Last Friday, Mr. Huxter came in with his VR equipment and we were able to experience roller coasters, bungee jumps and different rides from theme parks – it was great. Here are some of the pictures with the VR kit on.
A huge well done to all of Year 5 and a special thanks for the kind donations from the staff members too.
Year 5 are studying local history this term.
In the first half term, we focused on local history and geography. The children enjoyed a tour of Bradford Street and a heritage trail around the town centre. We then researched an area of local history and produced maps as well as information about their chosen area.
Maples took inspiration from the artist Andy Goldsworthy and collected items from nature which they then used to create collages to illustrate their chosen historical study.
This half term, we are focusing on art and design and technology. Taking inspiration from the textiles we saw on our trip to the Warner Textile Mill, we will be designing our own fabric and using it to design and make a decorated coin purse.

This term our topic has been ‘Out of the World’, which has involved looking at space and fairgrounds. Our science lessons have involved exploring the solar system and the class texts in English have also linked to this. In addition to this, we have looked at fairgrounds. We have planned, designed and built our own fairground rides and have really enjoyed doing this. This term we have also had brass lessons; this involved playing the trombone, trumpet and cornet. As classes we also performed a hip-hop dance with Leon and have also been on a road safety walk.
This term our topic has been the Vikings.
We have studied their way of life and looked at the human and physical geography of the Scandinavian countries they came from.
Year 5 have also been drawing Viking faces and artefacts, which we created as a model and clay face.
We had a Viking celebration to our parents, showing our work and the Viking bread we made.
The music celebration to our parents showed off our progress in performing a brass instrument.
Oaks class have made a video to show all the work they have completed in the summer term.
This term in our Year 5 classes we have been learning about fairgrounds. We will be making models of fairground rides and designing our own before cutting and building our final piece.
We are also doing a production called ‘Hoodwinked’, which is a version of Robin Hood. We are looking forward to performing it to the school and parents.
In English, we have been story writing, focusing on the plot using our class text – Robin Hood.
In Maths, we have been learning to compare and order decimal numbers from ascending and descending order.
