On Wednesday 5th June, we held a celebration of Maths and Times tables on Times tables Rock Stars day across the whole school! All the children and staff dressed up as rock stars; sporting wigs, sunglasses, tattoos and make up!
Foundation Stage and Year 1 children and staff came to school dressed as number blocks and participated in a range fun and practical maths-based activities. They made mega mazes, played number games and dominoes, completed a number hunt, practised their half and quarter fractions and listened to counting songs.
Year 2 played on TTRS for the first time, practising their tables and playing against their friends.
Year 3-6 completed different maths activities in their classes.
All the children in KS2 took part in a TTRS arena battle in their class to find the fastest person. These children then battled against the other winners from their year group in front of all of KS2 and year 2 in the afternoon. Children in years 2 - 6 also took part in a Battle of the Bands to see which class could collect the most TTRS points in the day.
Year 3 winner: Alex M.
Year 4 winner: Jimmy W.
Year 5 winner: Olivia K.
Year 6 winner: Jack A.
The day was a huge success and the joy on the children’s faces was a joy to behold.
Congratulations to all competition winners and to those children voted 'Best Dressed' in their class.
We all had a wonderful time on Thursday during science day. The children were able to experience lots of different experiments and had great fun. Year five looked at how skittles react with warm water, tried to make slime but it was not very successful - better luck next time. We also completed the Mentos & cola/lemonade experiment - we found that the diet cola and lemonade were the most successful.
Year 5 had a fantastic day on Friday at the Science Museum. We were very busy and visited most of the exhibitions at the Museum. We especially enjoyed the Wonder Lab. The children were extremely well behaved especially on the bus back when we got stuck in traffic!
On World Book Day each class decorated their classroom door - they look fantastic!
c!
As promised - Where's Wally!
We all had great fun celebrating World Book Day today. There was some fantastic costumes and Where's Wally was everywhere! Photos to follow.
We all had a visit from Engineering for Kids in assembly yesterday. Some of the children were able to take part in a building session - they had great fun.
Great fun was experienced in KS1 at the recent Reindeer Run in KS1. They raised an incredible amount of money!
The children in Year 1 recently enjoyed a visit to Hedingham Castle to support their learning about Castle life.
They explored the buildings and grounds, made sketches, followed maps and had a fantastic day.
Spruces really enjoyed sharing their books and reading with Elders on Friday. We hope to make it a weekly event!
Year 5 had a great time in dance with Leon this half term!
They completed a dance to the song 'Consider yourself' from the musical Oliver and found out about the different jobs children did in Victorian times.
Oaks visited Colchester Castle this week with the rest of Year 4. They had a fanstastic day exploring The Iron Age, The Roman Takeover and The Roman Heyday. The children went into the Roman vault under the castle and they were shown the Roman temple that was originally built before Bouddica and The Celts burnt it down. They were then shown how the castle was built and what would happen if the Celts refused to do their job. We also had a go at building a Roman villa or an Iron Age roundhouse so we could compare the differences. Finally the children walked around the museum to collect information in their packs.
Some children from John Bunyan Primary School took part in Remembrance Sunday by laying a wreath of poppies on the War Memorial in the public gardens.
Year five have been using chemistry to learn about chemical irreversible changes in science. We learnt that you can make Casein plastic from white vinegar and warm milk and this practise was started in the 1900's! We also found out that chemical changes cannot be reversed but they can be a bit smelly!
We were finding out about electrical conductors and insulators today in science.
We were really surprised that the orange became a conductor and lit the lamp!
We had our harvest assemblies today in KS1 & KS2. There was lots of great singing and a wonderful amount of food collected for the food bank.

Our new foundation stage children have now been at school for 2 weeks and have made a great start with their learning!
The children have learnt their first sounds, putting them on course to become independent readers and writers via our new Little Wandle Letters and Sounds phonics scheme and have been working on their subitising skills in maths.
The children have been introduced to the school code of conduct and are learning to represent their school by sharing and taking turns, being caring and thoughtful to their reception friends and adults, being respectful to others by listening carefully and considering the choices they make whilst learning through play.
The children have started their John Bunyan Primary journey by enjoying the story ‘The colour monster’ which helps them to recognise their own feelings through linking those feelings to a colour. The children have considered when they have felt the emotions detailed in the book and have commented that they feel calm when they play with their toys: Anger when others do not share with them; Sad when they miss their adults; Happy when someone asks them to be friends; Fear when they don’t want to be alone and love when they are with their adults at home.
