NEW INFORMATION PANELS AT BRAINTREE MUSEUM

With the support from the Royal Society Places of Science scheme and participation from local children, Braintree Museum launched three new information panels about local hero and ‘Father of Natural History’ John Ray (1627 – 1705).

Local school children that participated helped the Museum explore what parts of John Ray’s story mattered and were important to them. They also created two cartoon characters, brought to life by illustrator Rob Flowers, that help to illustrate John Ray’s story in a fun and engaging way. This all supported the content of the three new information panels on the plinth of the John Ray statue in the Museum Garden.

The project has been a fantastic launch pad for John Ray’s 400th birthday celebrations happening in 2027.

The children in gardening club have been enjoying preparing the soil, potting up seeds and nurturing their young plants before planting in our outside area.  This week they were excited to pick lettuce leaves to taste before choosing a sweet-pea flower to take home.  We hope that, by picking the flowers, more flowers will be encouraged to grow.

Year 2 had a fantastic trip to The Discovery Centre! We took part in lots of different activities - pond dipping, catching bugs in a butterfly net, seesaw, finding bugs in the trees and Lunch! The rangers were fantastic and we found lots of different animals.

Our Reception children have been learning the story of The Hungry Caterpillar using Talk 4 Writing. It’s inspired them to look in the environment for caterpillars and butterflies; a trip to our forest area was perfect for this. Look at that tiny caterpillar!

Reception were very lucky to have a STEM session with Engineering for Kids. They learnt what a windsock is for, how it works and then they made their own. We took them to the playground so they could test them. What a brilliant experience!
